If one goes through any Men’s Tailored Clothing Dept, one will have an unusual number of tie size choices this year.
How does one know what size works best?
The answer is actually easier than you think.
Always match the size of the lapel on your suit or sport coat.
In the photo above, a beautiful Jack Victor, Fall selection, notice the lapel on the jacket. It measures 2 7/8″. One measures a lapel’s width by measuring parallel to the ground, from the outside of the lower edge of one’s lapel across to the inside edge of one’s rolled lapel.
The tie’s width, measured at the widest part of its bottom, should be within 1/8″ of the width of one’s lapel.
Most suits purchased before this Fall Season, have lapels that measure 3 1/2″ in width. Suits purchased this year can have lapels that measure from 2 7/8″ to 3 1/2″, with many in a slightly smaller, 3 1/4″ size.
