My Journey Towards a New Knee

Below is our team’s photo after successfully competing in the Delaware Senior Olympics…taking another gold in the 55-59 age group.

After this tourney, I played two full-court games in our Colonie Senior Basketball League.  Some overly aggressive defensive play by my opponents resulted in a few awkward landings on my left (bone-on-bone) leg and I apparently injured something in the back of the knee.  Interestingly, my orthopedic surgeon said “you are not ready for a TKR…you injured your knee and need a few weeks off”.  So…I’ve taken three weeks off, and have restricted my leg workouts only to deep water exercises….primarily running in the deep water with a floatation device around my waist…30 minutes of sprinting for 90 seconds, then jogging for 15-20, then sprinting…for as long as I can go…I’m up to 30 minutes and it’s a workout!

My legs feel great, and I can honestly say I feel ready to go…but will wait for my next checkup and probably a little more re-hab before venturing back onto the hardwood.  I attribute a lot of my knee’s lack of pain to Play Again Now.  Here is a video that Dallas Clark of the Tampa Bay Bucaneers recently did extolling his experience with Play Again Now.  He is having a surprisingly strong season with Tampa this season after seemingly being washed up with a bum knee for Indianapolis.
