Five Details that Separate a Good Sport Coat from a Great One

Can you spot what I’d change?

I saw this sport coat recently and thought it would make a great educational discussion.

There are some things I really like:

  • Rich burgundy color.
  • Interesting Glen Plaid.
  • White shirt provides a clean foundation.

If this were hanging in my Design Showcase, here are the changes I’d make:

1. The fit.

The first thing I noticed was the pulling at the button. The coat appears just a bit snug through the half-girth, creating tension across the front. A sport coat should button comfortably without fighting the body.

2. Plaid interrupted by front darts.

This is a personal preference, but on bold plaids I generally avoid front darts. They interrupt the flow of the pattern and make pattern matching more difficult. I prefer a clean front whenever possible.

3. Pocket square.

The square introduces another dark element. I’d add considerably more white so it echoes the shirt and brightens the chest.

4. The tie.

The black and red stripe works, but I think there are stronger choices. A textured burgundy knit, navy grenadine, or even a deep charcoal tie would allow the jacket to remain the star.

5. The lapel pin and tie bar.

Individually they’re fine. Together, combined with the patterned jacket, striped tie and patterned pocket square, there’s simply a lot competing for attention. Sometimes editing one accessory creates a stronger overall look.

Good style isn’t about adding more.

It’s often about knowing what to leave out.

I’d love to hear what you would change.
